I created a tree topology with 3 switches and 4 hosts. I added a flow. Now I want to check if thats working. And even the packet goes through controller or not. How should I do this?

Another approach is to use ping, and read the statistics of the flows that are installed by you. You should be able to see how far the ping packets have reached.

Please note that the flow statistics is cached. I think by default, it is updated once every 10 seconds.

You can use Wireshark to track the packet (e.g. look for PACKETIN and PACKETOUT message, Flow_Mod()) and apply the OF filter if you want to view only the OpenFlow message.

Use OF if are using older version else Openflow_v1 for new version of Wireshark

To send Packet you can use Ping, iperf or use any other tools.
