Difference between MDSAL and ADSAL

asked 2014-08-12 05:45:16 -0700

I read the document about the MDSAL : https://wiki.opendaylight.org/view/OpenDaylightController:MD-SAL:MD-SALApp_Tutorial

But I am not able to understand the difference properly in the context of application/bundle code writing and designing. I will appreciate if you add some example to explain the difference.

@adisarun's pointer to the SDNHub article is one of the best explanation/differences between the 2 approaches. Also, Please refer to this email in the list on this topic.

As for an example of the usage patterns, you can refer to

  1. this file in OVSDB project which makes use of the AD-SAL forwarding rules manager to program Openflow rules. (Please search for forwardingRulesManager in the above link).

  2. We also use use MD-SAL here to program Flow-rules using the MD-SAL Data-store APIs. Please search for writeFlow in this file and you will find the usage pattern.

Comparing the above 2 will give you a high level overview on usage pattern between these 2 approaches from an application standpoint. If you are looking for AD-SAL vs MD-SAL from a provider (south-bound) development standpoint, it is lot more different and needs a more in-depth explanation.

@Madhu, if I want to write a consumer application on the top of MDSAL, then it would be similar to ADSAL, please correct if I am wrong.

It depends again. There are existing adaptors for AD-SAL NSF (Network Service Functions) like SwitchManager, TopologyManager, Routing, etc... that plumbs it to MD-SAL infrastructure too. So, if applications can make use of these ADSAL NSFs, then they can continue to use it with the MDSAL infra. But if a new application is written for MD-SAL, it would look significantly different (as you see in the example I gave in the OVSDB flow programming)

@Madhu, I was facing a problem similar to this. What I was trying is to use an ADSAL plugins service, in a MDSAL consumer. Is it possible ? What is the approach to use any service provided by an ADSAL plugins inside of an MDSAL application. https://ask.opendaylight.org/question/769/how-we-could-use-an-adsal-plugin-service-inside-of-an-mdsal-plugin/
