I would like to scale beyond mininet.

Can you suggest an OF13 compliant, dedicated Switch VM that you personally had success with?

I did not find a pre-built on the Internet. But, along the lines of subhash's recommendation I built an Ubuntu 15.04 VM and then installed ovs, and attached my physical ports to an ovs bridge:

$ sudo apt-get install openvswitch-switch
$ sudo ovs-vsctl add-br br0
$ sudo ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth1 tag=11
$ sudo ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth2 tag=11
$ sudo ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth3 tag=12
$ sudo ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth4 tag=12
$ sudo ovs-vsctl set bridge br0 protocols=OpenFlow13
$ sudo ovs-ofctl -O OpenFlow13 dump-flows br0
$ sudo ovs-vsctl set-controller br0 tcp:<xyz>:6653

Do you know of a dedicated virtual machine image I can download? Something similar to the Arista vEOS?

You can build it and create VMs.

I'm having trouble with that, so I hoped someone could point me to one.

there is also an .ova you can get from here: ovs is older 2.0.2 and known to have bugs.
