I am not using any virtualization software, will it work fine without using one? i installed hydrogen, mininet, maven plugin for eclipse. I want to develop a small application which uses hydrogen and mininet. Where do i start ? please help

Please use Helium release which contains lot of bugfixes from Hydrogen.

is helium good for beginners?

@hiba - Helium is better for everyone, because it's supported, more stable and more feature rich. There isn't a "beginners version" and an "expert version" or something.

I have faced issues with mininet when running it on the same host. However, when mininet and ODL (Hydrogen Base edition) are running on different VMs/hosts it works fine. There is no need for any Virtualization software if you have 2 different hosts on the same LAN. In order to develop applications, you should take a look at the sample applications in the source code : SimpleForwarding and Loadbalancer. Please refer to for more explainations.
