Since you mention Mininet, I assume you're interested in the OpenFlow capabilities of OpenDaylight. If you want to use the controller in a physical network, you need switches that support either OpenFlow 1.0 or OpenFlow 1.3, and configure them to connect to OpenDaylight's IP address. You may need to configure a management port with an IP address on each of the swicthes to make this work.
